Clay mineral evolution in the central Okinawa Trough since 28 ka: Implications for sediment provenance and paleoenvironmental change ArchiMer
Dou, Yanguang; Yang, Shouye; Liu, Zhenxia; Clift, Peter D.; Yu, Hua; Berne, Serge; Shi, Xuefa.
The Okinawa Trough is a natural laboratory for the study of later Quaternary land-ocean interaction and paleoenvironmental changes. In this study we reconstruct the evolution of clay mineral assemblages in Core DGKS9604 retrieved from the central Okinawa Trough. Illite dominates the clay mineral compositions, with average contents above 60%. Clay mineral evolution since 28 ka is closely related to changes in sediment provenance and paleoenvironment. Sea level rise and the strength of the Kuroshio Current control the dispersal and deposition of clays on the East China Sea shelf and in the Okinawa Trough, and thus, determine the clay mineral compositions in the core sediments. During the late last glacial period (28.0-14.0 ka), the paleo-Changjiang River...

Comments on "the Kuroshio intermediate water is the major source of nutrients on the East China Sea continental shelf" by Chen (1996) ArchiMer
Liu, Kk.
Chen estimated (Oceanol. Acta 19, 1996) the influxes of water and nutrients from the Kuroshio to the East China Sea shelf separately for the wet and dry periods within a year, based on a steady-state box model: This approach is demonstrated to be flawed in terms of both mathematical rigor and observational evidence. A time-dependent term must be included in the model calculation, if intra-annual variation is to be determined.

Distribution of the East China Sea continental shelf basins and depths of magnetic sources ArchiMer
Lin, Jing-yi; Sibuet, Jean-claude; Hsu, S.
The acoustic basement map of the East China Sea, established by the Shanghai Offshore Petroleum Bureau with all available industry seismic data, shows the existence of a 30-km-wide, 10-km-deep basin, that we named the Ho Basin. The Ho Basin belongs to a series of elongated deep basins extending over 600 km east of the Taiwan-Sinzi Ridge and flanked to the East by a ridge named the Longwan Ridge in its northern part. This new system of basin and ridge was probably formed during middle Miocene, sometimes in between rifting episodes occurring in the Taipei Basin and Okinawa Trough. It. complements the already defined system of five belts of back-arc basins and associated arc volcanic ridges in the East China Sea, which are progressively younger from the...

Extractable manganese in the southeastern East China Sea Shelf and the Okinawa Trough ArchiMer
Wei, Cl; Wong, Gtf; Sun, Sj; Gong, Gc.
The distribution of extractable manganese, which is likely to be similar to dissolved manganese, in a transect from the mid-shelf of the southeastern East China Sea Shelf across the Kuroshio to the Okinawa Trough was determined in May 1991. In the surface layer above 200 m, the higher concentrations of extractable manganese (5 to 6 nM) are found at the most shoreward station. Mixing between the shelf water and the Kuroshio results in a tongue of manganese-rich water (> 3 nM) extending from the shelf into the Okinawa Trough. In contrast, the Kuroshio surface water and the upwelling Kuroshio subsurface water, both with concentrations of < 3 nM, are manganese-poor. Thus, during upwelling and frontal exchanges, manganese-poor water is imported into the...

Internal architecture and mobility of tidal sand ridges in the East China Sea ArchiMer
Liu, Zhenxia; Berne, Serge; Saito, Yoshiki; Yu, Hua; Trentesaux, Alain; Uehara, Katsuto; Yin, Ping; Liu, J. Paul; Li, Chaoxing; Hu, Guanghai; Wang, Xiangqin.
On the basis of bathymetric and seismic data and data from piston cores collected by the Chinese-French marine geology and geophysics investigation of 1996, we discuss the internal architecture and mobility of tidal sand ridges in the East China Sea (ECS). We characterized the sand ridges on the middle to outer shelf of the ECS as tide-dominated sand ridges with southwest dipping beds, indicating that the regional net sediment transport is toward the southwest. As the sand ridges gradually migrate toward the southwest, new sand ridges are continually replacing old ones, and several generations of sand ridges have developed in the study area. High-resolution seismic data, acoustic Doppler current profiler data, and two C-14-dated piston cores, DGKS9614...

Magnetic mineral diagenesis in the river-dominated inner shelf of the East China Sea, China ArchiMer
Ge, Can; Zhang, Weiguo; Dong, Chenyin; Dong, Yan; Bai, Xuexin; Liu, Jinyan; Thi Thu Hien, Nguyen; Feng, Huan; Yu, Lizhong.
The inner shelf of the East China Sea is a river-dominated margin characterized by fine-grained mud deposits and a rapid sedimentation rate. Three short sediment cores (similar to 2.7m in length) were examined to characterize spatial variations in magnetic mineral diagenesis. The sediment cores were analyzed for sedimentation rates, magnetic properties, particle size distribution, organic carbon, and total sulfur content. The two more proximal cores with higher sedimentation rates (similar to 2.2cm/yr and similar to 0.96cm/yr) do not exhibit obvious effects of reductive dissolution of magnetite with increasing depth, which is consistent with their lower total sulfur content. The offshore core, A12-4, which has a lower sedimentation rate, contains clear...

Millennial-scale planktic foraminifer faunal variability in the East China Sea during the past 40000 years (IMAGES MD012404 from the Okinawa Trough) ArchiMer
Chang, Yuan-pin; Wang, Wei-lung; Yokoyama, Yusuke; Matsuzaki, Hiroyuki; Kawahata, Hodaka; Chen, Min-te.
High resolution planktic foraminifer fauna assemblage data are used to reconstruct the millennial-scale sea surface temperature (SST) variability of the past 40000 years at an IMAGES core site (MD012404) in the Okinawa Trough in the East China Sea (ECS). The fauna assemblages in core MD012404 are dominated by five species - Globigerinoides ruber, Globigerina bulloides, Neogloboquadrina dutertrei, Pulleniatina obliquiloculata, and Globigerinita glutinata, which account for > 70% in relative abundance. Our Q-mode factor analysis decomposed the fauna abundance data into three factors, which indicate cold water mass, warm water mass, and possibly coastal water flow with low salinity in the ECS. The MD012404 fauna data show abrupt changes at similar to 16...

Response to Liu's comments on "The Kuroshio Intermediate Water is the major source of nutrients on the East China Sea continental shelf" by Chen (1996) ArchiMer
Chen, Cta.
Exchanges between the East China Sea (ECS) and the Kuroshio have been recalculated by taking into consideration the intra-annual variation of salinity on the shelf. Flux through the Taiwan Strait, previously unavailable data in the Yellow Sea and in the central and northern ECS, denitrification and ground water fluxes are now also considered. The Kuroshio Intermediate Water remains the major source of nutrients on the East China Sea continental shelf, with slightly more upwelling in the dry season than in the wet season.

The Kuroshio intermediate water is the major source of nutrients on the East China Sea continental shelf ArchiMer
Chen, Cta.
The Kuroshio subsurface waters upwell onto the East China Sea (ECS) shelf and contribute a large amount of nutrients to the ECS. This contribution is many times more than the inputs from the Yangtze and the Yellow Rivers. The residence time of the ECS shelf water is estimated at 1.3 +/- 0.4 years. The new production rate of phytoplankton is 73 +/- 22 mg C/m(2)/day and the net burial rate of organic carbon is 41 +/- 23 mg C/m(2)/day.

Three dimensional simulation of tide and tidal current characteristics in the East China Sea ArchiMer
Bao, Xw; Gao, Gp; Yan, J.
With the fine horizontal (5' x 5') and vertical (15 levels) grids, a three-dimensional model, imbedded a closure turbulence sub-model, was used to calculate the barotropic tides and tidal currents in the Bohai Sea, Yellow Sea, and East China Sea. The computational results are in good agreement with the observed M2, S2, K1 and O1 tides in the domain. Comparison with fifty tide gauges showed that the averaged absolute differences between the simulated and observed amplitudes are only 3.95, 2.96, 2.5 and 1.78 cm for the M2, S2, K1 and O1 tidal waves, respectively. The averaged phase-lag differences of the four tides are 6.88, 6.96, 5.96 and 6.16 degrees. The model reproduces well the tidal charts and this characteristic is discussed in detail. Comparison with...

Variations in temperature and salinity of the surface water above the middle Okinawa Trough during the past 37 kyr ArchiMer
Yu, Hua; Liu, Zhenxia; Berne, Serge; Jia, Guodong; Xiong, Yingqian; Dickens, Gerald R.; Wei, Gangjian; Shi, Xuefa; Liu, J. Paul; Chen, Fajin.
East China Sea (ECS) is an important climate modulator of East Asia. In the last glacial period, the global sea level, the path and strength of the Kuroshio Current experienced great changes; combined with the variable volume of fresh run-off input, they made the hydrographic situation in the ECS quite different from nowadays. Based on high-resolution alkenone-sea surface temperature (SST) and oxygen isotope composition of planktonic foraminifera Globigerinoides sacculifer we reconstructed paleo-sea surface salinity (SSS) of a long piston core DGKS9604 retrieved from the middle Okinawa Trough of the eastern ECS. The delta O-18 and SST records display significant variations with global ice volume. Synchrony of the millennial-scale climate events like YD and...
